Introduction
This assessment activity requires you to gather a range of objects and images that relate to a theme and apply these to a series of prints. You will then develop these art works into a series of paintings.
The theme contains elements of Maori and Pacific pattern. To enhance these themes elements on Native New Zealand will added. The work of Sheyne Tuffrey will be looked at and help us tie these ideas together.
Task 1A
This task will take approximately two weeks of class and homework time.
Part A: Make a series of drawings based on Maori, Pacific and William Morris patterns on an A3 sheet of paper. Use white pastel on grey sugar paper. Finish off with a layer of brown ink. Make sure you record as much information and detail as possible.
Now design a ½ A4 design based on the patterns studied. Mix and match the shapes to generate something interesting and original. This will be used as our first print. This drawing will be completed in ink, dye and shellac.
2 X A3 pages
What am I looking for? Accurate recording. They should look look the patterns on the sheet. You designs should reflect the patterns you copied. I want to see clear links.
Task 1B
Part B: Draw your design from task 1 onto a ½ A4 piece of card. Cut design out and past onto a second piece of card. This will be used to print a background for your first print.
Mr D will demonstrate the printmaking process. It is important that you listen to the instructions and understand the steps needed. Once you have watched the demonstration you must list the steps required below.
You must produce at least two A3 printed backgrounds. On each one you must have two of the cardboard prints side by side. Once you have finished printing staple your cardboard print next to the original design.
At least 2 X A3 pages
What am I looking for? Detailed cutting. Spaces filled up. Don't just cut out a couple of koru and sticking them onto the card. Clean printing! No fingerprints, smudges, double prints. Clean even colour. I would make four prints if you have time. This allows for mistakes and experimentation later on.
Task 2A
This task will take approximately three weeks of class and homework time.
Part A: On an A3 sheet of paper make three of drawings based on flora and fawner that is native to New Zealand. This could include birds, plants and fish.
On a new page combine the previous drawings with the patterns drawn in task one. These will be the basis for your woodblock print.
2 X A3 page
Task 2B
Part B: On an A4 piece of custom wood draw two or three of your designs. Using woodcut tools carve out the white areas. When finished carving cut out shapes in the workshop.
Use these woodcuts to print on top of the backgrounds you produces earlier. Try different combinations and compositions. You can even flip and print the blocks to create extra images.
