Starting a folio is hard! What is even harder is selecting a theme that will keep you motivated and give you a good grade. Here is a selection of great NCEA folio boards to give you some ideas.
To get started you need to brainstorm out all of your ideas. I like to make a list of all the ideas I can think of. The more the better I then write out the pros and cons for the best topics. A pro might be that you are really interested in drawing superheros, a con might be that you are really bad at drawing people. A good topic might be local landscapes because you have easy aces to it, a con might be that you hate drawing landscapes. You need to be honest about your abilities at this stage. If you can't draw realistically, abstraction (art that doesn't look real) might be for you. Here is a a list of mistakes made by art students. READ IT!
I am not going to restrict your topic, however I am going to restrict how you do produce it. There is to be NO USE OF THE TRACING TABLE! If you can't draw it you can't do it!
Finally here is some work for you to do. You must finish this before you start drawing.

Folio Process made easy
Here is the folio process made easy. You need three basic ingredients. A subject, a theme and some artists.
Subject: That is the thing or stuff you are painting. It could be a tree, face, car, plane, jar, etc
Theme: This is the idea behind our subject. For example Mickey Mouse could be you subject, however he needs a theme to make it interesting. Some themes around Mickey could be
The blender is when you put those things together. You need to do this systematically. This means you ideas are related, organised and logical. Basically they need to fit together and develop.
If you do all of these things you hopefully get a folio board that meets all the assessment criteria, looks awesome and bags you the 12 credits.
